Neasmeletus full frontal

This is a close up of the head of a Nesameletus austrinis mayfly nymph from a Waimakariri River catchment stream. This is an endemic New Zealand mayfly species found in streams with good water quality and few trout. Although New Zealand has a modest number of mayfly species, it has a very high rate of endemism (locally unique species), with all 55 species in 20 genera only occurring in New Zealand. This nymph was photographed in a tank using a 65 mm Canon macro lens attached to a Sony A7rii camera using a metabones adaptor and a three-flash lighting setup to get approximately 3x or 4x life size.
